Hiren is 25 years of age and finished training in November 2013. A year on he is a runner at Sky Vision.
"Having come out of university wanting to work in TV, I managed to get the odd work with a couple of production companies however, I struggled to find much else. To support myself, I worked in a hotel as a receptionist for two years. A few months after hearing about MYP, I joined the training programme. It was a gamble personally and I took it. Ever since I left the hospitality industry, I have never regretted it. In fact it was the best decision I have ever made.
I took my role as trainee researcher within the current affairs team. My first research topic was a bit all over the place and at times I even confused myself. However, talking it through with producers definitely helped the topic come together. The best feeling was seeing mine and the team’s work on TV and my name on the credits. All the hard work paid off for that one moment of glory.
Following on from MYP, I took on a months work experience at Boundless Productions doing some casting for a new BBC3 ob-doc which was amazing! Soon after I had been offered to work as a junior researcher on World’s Best Diet. This would never of happened if I wasn’t put forward for an interview with Boundless and Shine by MYP.
Once finishing at Boundless, I hit that moment when you don’t know when your next bit off work will come in. This is the downside to freelancing but it didn’t take long before I found myself employed again. This came at Sky Vision. Just like at Boundless where my work was extended on a weekly basis, I was only meant to be at Sky Vision for 3 weeks. Come December it will be 8 months and I’ll be off travelling knowing I have a solid ground to come back into work from. I took on a runner role, as I knew I still had a lot to learn and I wasn’t wrong. I have learnt so much here and love it! Going out on shoots, taking on post production work, clearing music, researching, producing call sheets, dealing with contributors and much more.
To any new MYP trainees, I would suggest post MYP, never assume your length of contract will be what has been offered as if you’ve proven yourself to work hard, have common sense, ask questions, use your initiative and always offer to MAKE TEA then it will be longer than you think. Use your time at MYP to grow, learn from mistakes, ask questions when in doubt because Bob, Anca and Cristina. They will always provide an answer as well as the rest (Mariana, Lendon and Caroline). Also when the team goes for drinks, join in. It’s always a good way to bond and get to know each other better. Thank you MYP!" - October 2014
